Coatings in Defence designed for durability and reliability in even the most demanding applications
Plastic Coatings Ltd has a wealth of experience working alongside the defence sector, with a wide-ranging coating service delivered under one roof.
Trusted for our high standard of service and backed by quality approvals, Plastic Coatings is an established subcontract coating service provider for projects of all scales.
We handle materials including thermoset and thermoplastic polymers, fluoropolymers, electrophoretic paint, and more, applied through various processes, from powder coating and electrostatic spraying to wet spray painting.
Coating Properties :
Our wide range of coating options means we can deliver the ideal properties for even the most demanding applications.
Protect critical components with :
Chemical resistance
Abrasion resistance
High and Low working temperatures
Impact resistance
Low friction coatings
Heat resistant coatings
Non-conductive coatings
Corrosion resistant coatings
Through our extensive, sustained relationships with key material manufacturers, we can further obtain or produce coatings in a range of military colours.
Applications
Plastic Coatings’ solutions are suitable for land, air and sea defence equipment.
Some of our commonly coated products include:
Lead ballasts (Submarines)
For over 40 years, we’ve coated lead ballasts using our Plastisol PVC coating to encapsulate and electrically insulate ballasts, as well as enhancing durability in harsh environments.
Hand Controls (Helicopters, Aeroplanes, Flight Simulators)
With over 30 years’ experience coating hand controls, we utilise thermoplastic material Nylon 11, a hard-wearing material with a naturally smooth and attractive glossy finish.
To counteract problematic glare and reflections caused by glossy finishes in the cockpit, we use a proprietary system. This creates a light textured finish, while retaining the hardwearing, tactile properties that make Nylon an ideal material for use on touch points.
Ejector Seat Rails and Runners
Plastic Coatings has provided low friction coatings on ejector seat rails and runners for over 30 years.
Our proprietary coating system enables the ejector components to operate reliably and smoothly with consistent forces and resistance in a wide range of temperature, humidity and air pressure. This two-coat system is composed of a hardwearing material which provides a base for the low friction top coat to be applied to.
Engine Components (Aircrafts)
We have coated aero engine components for over 40 years, including the Rolls Royce Gnome engine, for which Plastic Coatings coats actuating rings to precise tolerances. We use a low friction, hard wearing coating system, ensuring consistent and reliable operation of the actuating rings in service.
Pressings, Castings and Welded Assemblies
We can coat components in military colours including: Nato Green, Bronze Green, Gloss White, Pearl White, Desert Tan, Light Stone and Matt Black. We also provide CARC (Chemical Agent Resistant Coating) and IRR (Infrared Reflective) compliant paints that meet DEFSTAN requirements.
Our experience spans over 10 years for these applications. For traditional wet paint type coatings, we provide pretreatment and apply the coating with accurately controlled stoving conditions, ensuring the very best coating performance in the most challenging environments.
Interior Components (Passenger Planes)
Our coating experience spans over 30 years for passenger plane interior components. We utilise aerospace approved powder coatings that offer a cost-effective and hardwearing coating system.
Internals of Wiring Conduit (Aerospace)
We have coated the internals of aerospace wiring conduit for over 20 years, using low friction coatings to help reduce and avoid abrasion of wiring sleeving/ insulation and to reduce snagging which aids installation.
Bus Bars (Aerospace)
We’re well-established coating bus bars for the aerospace industry, with over 20 years’ experience. For more information, see our Bus Bar page.
Bearing Journals (Helicopters)
Plastic Coatings has over 20 years of experience in this application. We apply a hardwearing, load bearing and low friction coating to bearing journals, which is then machined back to exacting tolerances. Applications include helicopters and other high performance uses.
Exterior Components (Military Equipment)
Our expertise painting exterior components for military equipment comprises pressings, castings and welded assemblies.
We utilise pretreatment processes to prepare the substrate, before applying traditional wet paint type coatings to the part with controlled stoving conditions. Typical coating systems include CARC (Chemical Attack Resistant Coatings) and IRR (Infrared Reflective Coatings), which are wet paint types.
Available colours include Nato Green, Bronze Green, Gloss White, Pearl White, Desert Tan, Light Stone and Matt Black.
