Working with Priory Park Community School
To ensure longevity of the coatings, we used our vast experience of Automotive OE Supply Chains to select a range of specialist coatings to best suit each application. For the floor-pan we used an electrostatic primer that is compatible with polyurea or 'raptor' top coats as the customer wanted to apply 'Raptor' at the school as part of the activity that the young people would participate in.
For the suspension components we selected PPA 571, one of our high performance thermoplastic coatings this one from Plascoat / Axalta. For over 20 years we have been successfully using this coating system for underbody applications for a number of automotive OE supply chains, the main benefits being excellent stone chip resistance and enhanced Salt Spray Test performance when compared to standard thermosetting powder coatings.
As the tin-ware and wheels would be really on show on the finished vehicle, a beautiful metallic red powder coating was selected. As you can see in the video below, this is a beautiful colour and using our state-of-the-art coating facilities we have achieved a great finish that should really add something special to the vehicle and also last the test of time.
We don't normally get involved in this type of project as stripping and recoating old car parts such as these can reveal all sorts of issues, but Stuart and his team along with the young people at Priory Park did a great job on the metal repairs before sending the items to Plastic Coatings Ltd. The results look fantastic and we can't wait to see the finished project!

Priory Park Community School is an alternative provision independent school in the Wren’s Nest area of Dudley, providing support for young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties or who are at significant risk of permanent exclusion from mainstream school. The school is unique to the borough, offering a broad and balanced core curriculum but also focussing on mentoring through sporting activities and practical skills, like the restoration and modification of Bugbert, a 1970's VW Beetle.
This is where Plastic Coatings Ltd could help. Having known Stuart Playford, Proprietor of the school for a number of years, we were approached to help with the restoration of Bugbert's floor-pan, suspension parts and engine tin-ware.
As all of the parts were original to the vehicle, they required the old coatings to be stripped off and the metal cleaned back with all corrosion and contamination removed. Using our vast experience of pre-treatments, we selected aluminium oxide grit as our media and blasted to a 2.5ra surface profile.
