Plastic Coatings Ltd offers a wide range of in-house,
pretreatment processes to ensure premium coating performance.
Whether utilising an individual service or a coating system combining several pretreatments, our processes are tailored to the specification requirements of your project – ensuring quality, aesthetic, and cost objectives are met.
Designed to improve the effectiveness of your coating, our pretreatment operations can further enhance product properties, such as coating adhesion, corrosion resistance and chemical resistance.
With over 70 years of operation, Plastic Coatings is equipped with the capabilities and expertise to undertake pretreatment on components of all sizes and projects of all volumes, across all industries.

Our Pretreatment Processess:
Stripping
For refurbishment projects, where components require old paint or coating to be removed, Plastic Coatings provides a professional service.
Stripping old coating maximises the appearance and performance of new coating, ensuring optimum effectiveness. Giving worn components new life, refurbishment is a cost-efficient and sustainable practice.
Our expert team can advise on removal procedures for old paints and coatings.
Degreasing
Our degreasing service is carried out on all projects to remove greases and oils collected on the component during manufacturing processes.
If not removed, these contaminants can prevent subsequent treatments from being effective, potentially creating cosmetic and performance problems in the finished coating film.
We provide a variety of degreasing options, including various chemicals, alkali washes, acidic washes and thermal degreasing, to thoroughly cleanse your product ready for coating application.
Blasting
Plastic Coatings utilises a range of blasting media to ensure primers, undercoats, and coatings adhere better to the component surface.
Blasting alters and increases the surface profile of a substrate on a microscopic scale, increasing the surface area a coating has to stick to.
Plastic Coatings undertakes steel grit blast, aluminium oxide grit blast, sand blast and many other blasting media for suitability across unique requirements.
Shot Peening
With shot peening, tensile stresses that have occurred during the manufacturing process can be relieved in order to strengthen the component and improve fatigue life.
Shot peening creates a compressive stress on the surface to relieve tensile stresses and prevent microcracks from appearing. Fatigue life can be increased by up to 1000% depending on the part geometry and material, and shot material, quality, intensity and coverage.
Plastic Coatings uses the Almen Arc method of measurement for validating the process.
Phosphating
For projects prioritising corrosion resistance, Plastic Coatings offers phosphate conversion coating.
Our phosphate conversion coating creates a thin, sacrificial layer on the substrate, protecting the coating from the spread of corrosion should the coating film be damaged at a later date. This enhances the durability of the finished coat and the component.
In consideration of application, environment, and more, we can offer various corrosion resistance levels with iron phosphate, zinc phosphate, manganese phosphate or tri-cationic phosphate.
De-embrittlement
Our de-embrittlement service is recommended for components with a high level of hardness, susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement.
When components are processed through acidic processes, such as phosphate, hydrogen can be introduced into the substate, causing it to lose its ductility and become brittle.
Brittleness can cause premature component failure. Plastic Coatings provides de-embrittlement to remove the dangerous hydrogen, alleviating the risk of premature failure.
Primers
Our priming service is suitable for increasing chemical adhesion between a coating film and substrate; this can be useful where the component is not suitable for blasting or where the coating film composition requires a primer to ensure or enhance adhesion.
We also offer a range of primers that enhance corrosion resistance of the final coating system, enabling you to choose from a wider range of finishes whilst maintaining coating system performance.
Plastic Coatings offers an array of primers, supporting you to determine the right coating system for your product.
Undercoats
Plastic Coatings further offers undercoats, including electrophoretic paint or e-coat.
Providing a functional coating, generally undercoats are recommended in addition to other coatings to provide increased component protection, corrosion resistance and cosmetic value.
